Poet for the Month - August 2008

August is our Month for Sunshine and Summer. Since we are reached all around the world, let’s just say our month for having fun in the sun. For whatever it means to you it brings Summer Mornings.

Most of you know him very well, so let me introduce him as our

Nick Grimshawe

Nick comes to us from Mission, BC, Canada. He has been writing and telling stories from a very young age. Please read bio here and if he is not a friend, please invite:

Nick really has me doing some serious thinking and dreaming. I have loved reading all these poems and hope you will also.

Poet's Comments

Poems are entities: they come directly from the world of the spirit. When I write poetry, a doorway opens and the words flood through. I am very careful not to interfere in the process. A long time ago I tried to “write” poems. Poems were the first form of writing I tried my hand at. But until I can allow that doorway to open and touch that center from which all things flow, my efforts seem rough, and difficult.

When I can be in that presence: then the music flows. I suspect it is the same for all art, but for poetry, there is a special surrender, a giving-up to something more uniquely creative.

I have included a selection of poems; some are fragments, others are complete works.

I do not judge or evaluate a piece, and use the most minor touches of editing. I give them to you now as they were born to me.

Touching

The after glow has come and gone,

There is just the silence now:

The silence of indrawn breath,

A heart still racing slows.

Skin to skin we touch,

Where warmth reminds of sunlight,

Precious life, and love.

Soar

Soar with the Eagles,

You who are gone,

The sky is for you,

Limitless now,

Time gone, you have forever.

Drift on the thermals,

Joy will take you higher,

Up where the stars shine,

In a darker sky,

Free now,

Space gone, you have forever.

The lights I see at night,

Sparkling before the dawn,

Give measure,

To my tiny bit

Of your wholeness,

Now that you are gone,

You have forever,

And I have you.

This is poetry as metaphor, a metaphor of my own journey on the Great Way.

A Vision

Out of the swirling mist, I saw a dark form hover.
At first I feared, what dark misery came to frighten me.
Then I strained to see the form more clearly.
I saw grey about the edges, perhaps a touch of purple.
Was that a hand or a head?
The mist stirred.
Back I stepped.
Should I flee?
Movement at the edge, blurred but quick.
A flash of silver, a splash of golden haze,
Quicker,
Something huge,
I strained to see.
A man, no men, many men, sun tanned and dressed in robes of fire,
Laughing men, coming straight for me,
And with them a gigantic form, still hidden, grey on grey,
Then another swirl of the mist,
Orange light with a fiery halo blazes behind the form,
A massive leg lifts and steps forward.
A long trunk reaches out for me.
I see gold bangles,
A Green, Indigo and red triangle on the massive forehead,
Large Ivory tusks,
I am lifted up,
The sky is blue above.
I am gently placed on a saddlecloth of flowing hues,
The brown tree trunks first, then the palm splayed leaves,
The sun burns through.
Around me colorfully dress people in rainbow hues,
Bang on drums and cymbals clash.
I laugh too,
The last mist burnt off by the sun, disappears but a whole new world is born.
I am not afraid, but full of joy,
The new day is sprung and full of dancing.
Ahead a river sparkles in the sun,
Children play and splash in shallow pools.
Beyond, the mountains rise up to touch the sky of morning,
I stroke the Elephant softly; he is an old, old friend.
I am happy.
My vision came out from soupy grey to grace me with this
Blissful day.

Actually, it is easy and I enjoy doing it. I love to use my graphics whenever they fit a mood or situation. I used to paint pictures as background for a poetry company. I loved the challenge!

Dear Nick,

As I have promised you last night, I am bringing you my impressions now.

First two poems are so deep and touching. Even though they are witnesses of our limitless nature ... with a silent hope for everyone to discover this nature within, they call in a strong emotions. The both of them brought tears in my eyes :) ...

Third one is a delicious for me. Of course, I miss E. words to speak of it ... but one day ... I will miss them not! I promise :) .

I like your style and language very much.

The rest of my impressions I can send you only via a Channel of poetry, because It`s translator is powerful and precise :) .

Hi Branka, I have to say the first poem carried very deep emotions for the beauty and fragility of life, and how in a touch we can let it the light. The second poem was written to my Mother who passed away in April. So there is lots of emotion there, but in the end my mother was able to choose the time of her passing and not all of us get that opportunity. The third poem is the fun one, but also has a lot of meaning for my life, the adventure I feel I'm on, and the wonderful people on the same path, and how that is all one big celebrations. But of course, the poems says it all better than I could here. Thank you. Nick

Hi Branka Sorry I missed the deadline. It's Tuesday. Her is a new poem for all the wonderful readers of this forum. There is Joy. There is joy in the sight, Of sunlight on water, Of golden haze Shimmering in late summer heat, Of lazy days, On River Banks, Watching the water run to the sea, Of languid evenings watching stars come out, One by one in the midnight sky. There is joy in the scent, Of sun drenched air, Of lavender hints, Lingering at the edge of now. Of vanilla tones, On faint breezes, Carrying memories of yesterday. Of rose perfumed twilights bringing down night, One sweet hour at a time. There is joy in the feel, Of sunlight on flesh, Of green gold grass, Waving in the warm breath of love, Of kindled passions On long afternoons, Watching tree shadows lengthen. Thanks for this poetic line up of some golden moments . There are no golden moments without joy. What salt is for soil and body, joy is for spirit and mind. But you said it much better than I .

Here is the poem you liked so well:

Soar

Soar with the Eagles,

You who are gone,

The sky is for you,

Limitless now,

Time gone, you have forever.

Drift on the thermals,

Joy will take you higher,

Up where the stars shine,

In a darker sky,

Free now,

Space gone, you have forever.

The lights I see at night,

Sparkling before the dawn,

Give measure,

To my tiny bit

Of your wholeness,

Now that you are gone,

You have forever,

And I have you.

Nick, this one makes me think of Sally now that she has her wings. She also liked to chase the vultures and now I think she flies with them. (Sally was our lab that was killed just before her 2nd birthday.)

Loved that poem Nick. "Soar" is what nature poetry is all about. That's the way to do it. This kind of stuff is special because it puts us all back in touch with it all and takes us away from our daily grind. It's like coming home after a long time away. So here it is again,

There is Joy

There is joy in the sight,
Of sunlight on water,
Of golden haze
Shimmering in late summer heat,
Of lazy days,
On River Banks,
Watching the water run to the sea,
Of languid evenings watching stars come out,
One by one in the midnight sky.

There is joy in the scent,
Of sun drenched air,
Of lavender hints,
Lingering at the edge of now.
Of vanilla tones,
On faint breezes,
Carrying memories of yesterday.
Of rose perfumed twilights bringing down night,
One sweet hour at a time.

There is joy in the feel,
Of sunlight on flesh,
Of green gold grass,
Waving in the warm breath of love,
Of kindled passions
On long afternoons,
Watching tree shadows lengthen.
Of laughter carried on sultry night air,
One golden moment after another.

Hello all, I promised I would be back. Here are a few more bits and pieces. Hope you enjoy. MY SOUL I throw my soul into the sea, To be washed by tides that ebb and flow, Around and deep within me, Churned in the swells and troughs of life, To be tossed back to the Sand, At some later time. Spent, But completely Clean and Free. Just a Sentence Light Sparkles on the Dancing Sea Enticing me. A Bannister of Stars Slide down a banister of stars, To be propelled out into the deep, dark, void, And land upon a moonbeam, dancing, laughing, Slide down a stairway of starlight To hop a ride on a fiery, sputtering comet, Throw back you head, fill your lungs with joy. Slide down the solar system, Passed Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars, To the moon then Earth Slide down the sky To a fragrant green jungle And, Rebirth, Again, And a Smile. "A Bannister of Stars" reminds me of Sara Teasdale's poetry. She has always been a favorite of mine.

To Nick and Friends,

Now I see why Nick Got the Poet of the month award. You have a very broad imagination and are very good at transferring it to word and pen. Nice! I don't get the chance to write as much poetry as I would like to. Your from a beautiful country. I have been to Canada several times. The fishing is better there than here. Haven't been there in a while. Sara asked me if I had any poetry at the moment to share with her. Reply, nothing new Sara but I do have some poetry I wrote a short while ago on the "Free Ebooks" Page on my website. Some of it is funny and some is about the Spiritual side to Nature. You are all welcome to sample it at your leisure. Pennsylvania is a beautiful State. Just visited there in June and was mystified by the magnificent trees. Don't like the traffic and confusion of the big cities, though. My son is enjoying it very much.

I don't know if that pic is a real Kincaid or not. I just thought it fit with the staircase, and it is SUCh a pretty picture. I like Kincaid too, but so many of his look alike.

And Sara, I am deeply in you debt for offering me the use of your forum for the month of August. You are a great hostess and I appreciate all that you have done. Now that August is almost done, I thought I would leave you with this one last poem. I do hope that you enjoy. The Kingdoms of Sand (c) by Nick Grimshawe The sea grass grows in tuffs upon the hillocks of sand, by the water’s edge. The long green spears gritted with sand, eternally bend to the on shore breeze. Eyes cast against the blows of sand, survey the long sweep of the shore line. Then squinting in the sunlight seeks the horizon. Was the sea our Eden from which we were cast out to the shore, And left to grow legs, and arms, and lungs? The surf rolls in with much clashing and clattering and moaning, one soldier wave upon another marching in the eternal tide of life. Hair whips across the face stinging tearing eyes. The gulls’ cries harkened down the alley ways of air, And a seashell washes up to rub against cold toes. White caps dancing at yearning distances, Call out the stories of heartache and woe, of love and joy, all submerged in a wavering world of blue, Which caress the heart in all of it places and calls forth the sanctity of human touch: hand to hand, arm to arm, hip to hip, Sadly knowing you are not One, “But you are” says the whispering sand, Slithering over the hillocks past the sea grass to where you stand. The Kingdoms of Sand
