WELCOME TO: "HEALTH NEWS + TRENDS" - 257 The Number, in thousands, of Cancer Deaths in 2007 linked to Low Vitamin D Levels - Why experts say it's time to get way more Vitamin D.
THE NEW SUPERVITAMIN
The"D" in Vitamin D doesn't stand for "Deficiency," but it might as well. Current guidelines call for 200 to 600 IU Daily; many researchers now believe we may need up to 1,000 IU or more-from D-rich Foods such as Fish and Low-Fat Fortified Dairy Products, 10 to 15 minutes of Direct Sunlight Daily, and Supplements. New studies show stocking up on the "Sunshine Vitamin" may improve your Health in a variety of ways; here's why becoming a devotee of D is such a bright idea.
GETTING ENOUGH D CAN...
* Relieve Backaches. Among 360 Chronic Back Pain Patients, symptoms improved in 95% of those who took a high dose of Vitamin D Daily for 3 Months.
* Ward Off Cancer. Higher levels may cut in half your risk of getting Breast, Colon, or Rectal Cancer; consuming 300 IU or more daily reduced Pancreatric Cancer risk up to 44%, compared with those who consumed less than 150 IU daily.
* Deter Diabetes. In a study of more than 83,000 Women, those with the highest combined intakes of Calcium and Vitamin D had the lowest risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
BEING D-DEFICIENT CAN...
* Damage Your Heart. Inadequate amounts may increase the risk of Peripheral Artery Disease by 80%.
* Weaken Bones. Eighty-five percent of Women hospitalized for Osteoporotic Hip Fractures have a Deficiency, according to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
* Increase the Blues. Blood Levels of D were 14% lower in Depressed Indivuals, a recent study discovered.
* Shorten Your Life. Among 13,331 Adults, a Deficiency boosted Premature Death Risk by 26%. -Danielle Kosecki
SEXUAL HEALTH DIAGNOSIS YOUR MD MIGHT MISS
IF YOU'RE SADDLED with a Yeast or Bacterial Infection that doesn't respond to treatment, ask your doctor if the Genital Burning, Itching, and Irritation could instead by Vulvodynia. The Condition causes symptoms often mistaken for Infection; experts believe Misfiring Nerve Fibers may be the actual culprit. Yet many doctors ignore the possibility-over 60% of Women with Vulvodynia visit at least Three Physicians in search of a proper diagnosis, found Harvard researchers. Learn more at the National Vulvodynia Association's Web Site (nva.org). -Julian Kesner
ACTIVELY HEALTHY
Only 15 % of Americans are aware that exercise lowers the risk of Colon Cancer, according to a study by the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. In fact, lack of physical activity is linked to more Colon Cancer cases than any other risk factor. The good news: If you're physically active, you're 30 to 40% less likely to get Colon Cancer than Sedentary people are. -JK
BREAKTHROUGH YOU CAN USE
CANKER SORES: QUICKER RELIEF: A New Medicated Oral Disc could be the first OTC Product proven to speed healing of Canker Sores, the Common Mouth Ulcers caused by Stress, Allergies, Braces, or Dentures. Canker Sores are typically treated with Messy, Bad-tasting Topical Gels-many of which ease pain but don't always shorten a lesion's duration. A clinical study found that all-natural CankerMelts Discs, which contain Licorice Root Extract and Collagen, heal the Sores significantly faster with a Placebo-with 90% healing in 1 week, compared with 68%. The Tiny Adhesive Discs dissolve in 2 to 6 hours; replace the Disc until the Sore is gone. Available at oralhealth.com or at Pharmacies ($16 for 24 Discs). -Alyssa Bieler
GO BANANAS FOR BETTER BP
To lower Blood Pressure, don't just eat less Sodium-you should also increase your Potassium Intake, as it speeds up the body's Sodium Excretion, say researchers at the Hypertension Institute of Nashville. Lead author Mark Houston, MD, says most Americans consume more Sodium than Potassium, but it should be the other way around. Some popular Potassium-rich Foods to help fix this: Baked Potatoes, Tomato Paste, Lima Beans, Yogurt, Cantaloupe, and Bananas. -JK
EASY ASTHMA ANTIDOTE: A set of Basic Breathing Exercises can help Mild Asthmatics decrease their need for Fast-acting Inhalers by 86% after 7 Months and cut their Preventive Inhaler Use by 50%, according to a study by Australia's Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. A video demonstration of the exercises is available free online; to watch, visit prevention.com/links. -JK
GET EXACTLY ENOUGH SLEEP: If you're too Sound (or Light) a Sleeper, take this to Heart: A new study of Women ages 50 to 79 found that those who regularly slept more than 9 hours nightly were 60 to 70% more likely to have a Stroke-though researchers still aren't sure why. Women who averaged 6 or fewer hours of Shut-Eye per night had a 10 to 20% increased risk, according to the University of North Carolina School of Public Health Study. If this sounds like you, Monitor your Heart Closely with Your Doctor, and aim for the recommended 7 to 8 hours of nightly sleep. -JK
FAST-ACTING MIGRAINE FIX: The New Drug Treximet, taken within an hour of onset, halted Migraines in 30 minutes for some users and relieved all pain in 52% of Patients in less than 2 hours, found a recent study at Thomas Jefferson University. The Combo Pill, made from Sumatriptan (which blocks Pain Nerves) and Naproxen Sodium (to Control Inflammation), also helped reduce Light Sensitivity and Nausea and Cut Patients' Chances of developing more Severe Migraine symptoms by half. Visit prevention.com/migraine to learn about other FDA-approved Migraine Therapies. -JK
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS RELIEF: A once-monthly Injectable Antibody called Golimumab reduced Pain, Stiffness, and other Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms in clinical trials and could be approved by the FDA soon. Made by Johnson & Johnson and Schering-Plough Corp., it blocks Inflammatory Proteins associated with RA and has few side effects. Scientists at Newcastle University in Britain have begun the first phase of clinical testing on a new RA Vaccine. The Drug alters a Patient's White Blood Cells to tamp down an Overactive Immune System. Collagen, a Protein found in Tendons and Cartilage, can effectively reduce Joint Pain and Stiffness when extracted from Chickens and given to Humans, say Chinese Scientists. The Anhui Medical University Team found it to be almost as effective as the RA Drug Methotrexate.
SUPPLEMENT WATCH
NATURAL WAY TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL
You can bring down your LDL levels without a prescription; here's how to do it safely.
*PRO: A new Mayo Clinic study finds that taking Red Yeast Rice (which can naturally contain LDL-lowering Lovastatin) and Fish Oil Supplements together with a Healthy Diet and Exercise lowers Cholesterol as effectively as a Prescription Statin.
* CON: ConsumerLab.com tested 10 Red Yeast Rice Supplements and found huge differences in the Lovastatin content per 600 mg Pill, from 0.1 mg (Walgreens Finest Natural) to 10.1 mg (Nature's Plus Herbal Actives); Prescription Statins usually contain a Once-daily Dose of 10 mg to 40 mg. Other brands contained Citrinin, a Potential Toxin. Access the report at prevention.com/links.
* BOTTOM LINE: Citrinin-free brands Schiff, Cholestene, 21st Century, and Cholestrin had 1.7 mg to 3.6 mg Lovastatin per Pill. Talk to your doc first. -JK
EXPERT DRUG ADVICE
PILL POTENCY: A DATED CONCERN
Q: I have a bottle of expired Ibuprofen Tablets. Will they still work if I have nothing else?
A: If your Ibuprofen was capped and properly stored, it might still be effective. Drug products certified by the USP (a leading standards authority) retain at least 90% potency up to their expiration month, and manufacturers typically choose conservative expiration dates anyway-it ensures that products are purchased regularly. Research suggests that most Meds, in both opened and unopened containers, are safe and effective at least a year or two past the expiration date (provided they're kept in a low-humidity environment-so don't store Pills in your steamy bathroom). Still, practice common sense: Risk an expired Pill for Sore Muscles, if need be-but if it's a potentially lifesaving daily Aspirin or Prescription Med, don't put your trust in an expired batch. -RICHARD HARKNESS is a Consultant Pharmacist and author of five books on evidence-based Natural Medicine. Re: HEALTH NEWS + TRENDS Posted: Nov 16 2008 01:08 PM |
Good morning Shirley,
Great information. I am a believer in vitamin D. A deficiency in that vitamin nearly killed me. I am allergic to milk and have to read labels on all foods before purchasing. I get some really wierd looks when I am noticed shopping in the kosher section of supermarkets.
Over the years, none of my medical doctors picked up on the problem. My Mom pumped me up with cod liver oil most of my young life. I never knew why and I don't know that she quite understood herself.
You are so right about how valuable it is. Can you imagine a person who makes her living on being physically fit. (I was dance teacher in my high school. I had a physically demanding profession.) My doctors were totally baffled for over 6 months. Their answer was anti anxiety medications and anti-depressants. They nearly killed me with their medicines, because they were treating each of my symptoms. And there were a lot of symptoms. The rheumatologist is the one who finally figured out the problem and put me on massive dosages of the vitamin.
I discontinued all of the other medicines on my own. I basically gave up coverage that I was entitled to as long as I agreed to take the medicine. I opted for a clear head and health. Anti-depressants had me staring at the wall. If I had known about the deficieny earlier, I would have been able to work longer.
This whole experience has made me very skeptical of doctors whom I believe are in league with the drug manufacturing companies.
Have you ever really listened to the side effects listed after some of the tv drug advertisements. Really scary.
Thanks for your informative posts.
Peace,
Lucy |

I was recently at Dr. and he told me to take Calcium and Vitaming D. The Druggist suggested separate tablets to get the proper amount. This is the person who knows the most about all kinds of pills. I have Arthritis and Fibromyalgia and started taking Glucosomine/ Chlondroitin about six years ago. This has helped me so much I have very little pain anymore. Shirley Manion
